  1. Treadmills, as used for human power sources, dates back over 4000 years
  2. Primary uses were to lift buckets of water and power grain mills.
  3. Treadmills have also been used as punishment in prisons up to the second half on the 19th century.
  4. A US patent for a “training machine”, number 1,064,968, was filed over 100 years ago.
  5. In 1952 the first treadmill for health research was designed and built at the University of Washington, USA.
  6. Early treadmills were expensive and bulky, and remained the preserve of health clinics and research labs.
  7. William Staub, a US mechanical engineer,  constructed the first home prototype treadmill in the late 60′s.
  8. Dr Kenneth H Cooper, early health pioneer, teamed up with William Staub and eventually released the first commercially available treadmill, the PaceMaster 600.
  9. Mr Staub used the treadmill regularly, and died in 2012 at the grand age of 96.
  10. Treadmills are now found in all areas of the markets, and are governed by the IEC EN 957-1 and IEC EN 957-6 safety standards.
