STAFF and students at Rhymney Comprehensive School in Caerphilly are celebrating this week after winning a national competition.
The school took delivery of a top of the range Spirit treadmill worth £4,000 on Thursday (November 20th) after fitness awareness posters created by students at the school received the most ‘Likes’ on www.facebook.com/spiritfitnessuk.
The school was one of hundreds that took part in the competition, which required students to create and submit fitness awareness posters on Facebook and get people to ‘Like’ their designs.
Samantha James, Leader of Teaching and Learning for Physical Education at Rhymney Comprehensive School, said: “We’re all delighted and were really surprised when Spirit Fitness got in touch to tell us we’d won.
“The Spirit treadmill is a really great addition to our fitness facilities here at the school and the students can’t wait to start using it – especially as the winter approaches!”
Among the sporting heroes students depicted in the posters were British former javelin thrower Fatima Whitbread, Welsh footballer Gareth Bale and Paralympic sprinter Jonathan Peacock.
Spirit Fitness UK Director, Audrey Burton, said: “Everyone at Rhymney got involved in the competition and they really deserved to win so we’re delighted to deliver their treadmill to them and give them any technical advice they need about their school gym while we’re there.
“The Spirit treadmill is a top quality piece of kit so we’re confident they will enjoy using it for many years. Hopefully they’ll be the first of many schools in the area to contact us when they need any fitness equipment and advice on setting up their own school gym.”
All the Spirit Treadmill competition entries can be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/spiritfitnessuk and runner up prizes of pedometers are also being sent out to schools that took part to encourage students to take their 10,000 daily steps.
